FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
Below are answers to commonly asked questions about Pier 360.
General
What is Pier 360?
Pier 360 is a peer-run nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and empowering individuals in mental health and substance use recovery. Formerly known as CVAB, we are an organization of people with lived experience offering connection, hope, and tools for healing.
What happened to CVAB? Why the name change?
CVAB is now Pier 360. The name change reflects our growth and evolving vision—a full-circle approach to recovery grounded in community, dignity, and empowerment. Though our name has changed, our heart and mission remain peer-led and community-rooted.
What does the name “Pier 360” mean?
"Pier" symbolizes a place of connection and support—where people can arrive and feel supported. "360" represents wholeness, inclusivity, and the full journey of recovery. Together, Pier 360 reflects our commitment to meeting people where they are, in every direction life takes them.
Is Pier 360 still peer-run?
Yes. We are proudly peer-led. That means the people providing support have lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery. We believe in walking alongside, not ahead. Almost everyone involved with Pier 360 from Staff to Board members are peers with lived experience.
How do I get involved or become a member?
Just come by! Most of our services are free and open to anyone seeking support. Becoming part of our community doesn’t require a formal membership—just a willingness to show up and engage.

Recovery & Peer Support Philosophy
What does “peer support” mean?
Peer support is support given from someone who has walked a similar path. It’s non-clinical, compassionate, and rooted in shared understanding.
Are your staff trained professionals or people with lived experience?
Both. Our staff are peers with lived experience who receive specialized training in providing ethical, trauma-informed support.
How does peer support differ from therapy?
Peer support isn’t therapy—it’s about mutual connection, validation, and walking alongside someone, rather than treating them.
Is recovery really possible?
Yes. We’ve lived it. Recovery isn’t always linear, but it’s absolutely possible. You don’t have to walk it alone.
