As we move forward into the second month of 2026, I continue to think about courage. We value it, talk about it, and see examples of it every day. Courage is a matter of the heart, not just physical bravery, but the determination to face challenges, risks, and troubles with resilience, even when difficult. We know that it takes courage to meet the realities of each day, and this is notably true for people living with mental health and substance use challenges.

As an organization, we at Pier 360 think every person has the courage within themselves to meet the daily challenges, and we acknowledge that the support of others makes it more likely. We have the opportunity and the responsibility to see courage in our peers and reflect with them just how much heart they have. I used to frequently tell a story about our agency and peer support that delivered a message of hope, that we see how smart, how compassionate, and how courageous our peers are, and it is especially true when we support each other in community by beginning with “we see you.”
As we go through the second month of 2026, let me encourage you to see the bravery, the courageous heart of each other, and tell each other, “I see you, we see you.”
